I have been line dancing since August 1993 and instructing since May 1995. How did I start?
Like a lot of people I first saw line dancing demonstrated at a local shopping centre by a group from Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. As a lover of country music the sound of new country they danced to sounded great and I couldn't wait to get involved.

It was a demonstration by a local group at the 1st birthday of the supermarket where my wife Lorraine works that we made contact and started learning. After the Christmas break the tutor did not return to the class and the dancers decided to continue on their own, however the sound system was very small and the music was all on tape so I said I have an old stereo at home we can use and I will buy 10 minute tapes to place one song each side for easy access. I still attend that class and provide the sound and music.

My first taste of instructing came about through my involvement in Lions, the ladies from our Lioness Club approached me to teach them line dancing for a hoe-down they were planning in 5 weeks' time. Four weeks and 8 dances later we attended the hoe-down, everyone enjoying it so much they asked if I would continue teaching them. At the same time I took redundancy and struck out on my own to make a business out of mowing lawns, pruning trees and gardening, etc. However, requests to start classes outstripped the time available so the lawns etc. were sold to allow all my time for line instructing.

Each month on the second friday we have the Cactus Club, a social for everyone, from 7.30pm to 11.00pm, the following Sunday afternoon from 1.30pm to 5.30pm Grapevine Linedancing have a social for those who prefer not to go out at night and for the ladies who just can't get enough.

When coming to New Zealand, mark Hamilton as one of the places to stay; it is 1 1/2 hours to all the major tourist attractions in the central North Island and has a great line dance scene.

See you on the dance floor sometime.
